Why East Renfrewshire is Scotland’s best Council to live in.

The headline? It’s not ours but comes from The Times (19th July 2024). We do have to claim a vested interest. We have an office in Clarkston and many of our colleagues live there.

Is the article accurate? Yes. The stats and our experience confirm it.

East Renfrewshire Council is a small council and responsive to its citizens needs. They even answer the phones. You never hear of our Councillors having rammies, they appear to be concentrating on the day job. The bins get emptied, and the recycling rates are the highest in Scotland. The streets are clean and litter free. The schools in the area are at the very top of the league tables year after year. The roads are relatively pothole-free based on a none-too-scientific comparison with our neighbour, Glasgow. It is a safe place to bring up a family or to enjoy your retirement.

East Renfrewshire is geographically blessed. 30 minutes down the motorway and you are on the Ayrshire coast. It’s less than an hour to Loch Lomond. The train services are being electrified, and are clean and generally reliable. There are miles and miles of cycle paths and trails at the wind farm at Eaglesham where you can see Ailsa Craig even in poor weather. Glasgow City centre (which is not the place it once was) is 20 minutes by train. The Hydro just 30 minutes.

Businesses do well in East Ren. The Council has built Greenlaw Works in Newton Mearns which caters for small start-ups. The shops are generally all let. Giffnock town centre is a hive of evening activity. There are good places to eat and drink. We love Eat in Clarkston, Banco, Pan et Vino and Southside in Giffnock.

If it’s sports you love, there are parks and playing fields aplenty. Hampden and Queens Park FC are 4 stops on the train. If you like red blooded football, there is Arthurlie in Barrhead.

Every dog we know loves East Ren.

There is a price to pay. The house prices are high, but everything has a cost.

Lastly, we need to say a word about our neighbour Scot McAuley at Scot’s shoe repairs in Clarkston. Scot is an example of a small local business which is the life blood of East Ren.

So is the headline justified? – we think so, but we are biased.
